We recently discussed the state of Maine with local graphic designer and photographer extraordinaire, Jean Cousins.

MTC: First question. Why Maine?

JC: Maine is home. It’s where I was born and grew up. I have lived here all my life, aside from the 16 years my husband, two kids, and I spent living in Vermont. We returned to Maine about seven years ago. The mountains were beautiful, but there is nothing like living near the ocean.

MTC: What are a few of your favorite must-see spots?

Kettle Cove is my go-to spot. We live nearby, so it is quick for me to grab my camera when I see the sky getting interesting and head over there. The sunsets deliver year-round. Bug Light is another favorite. Plenty of space to wander. Panoramic views of the harbor and the Portland skyline. Willard Beach with the landmark Fishing Shacks is a wonderful spot. I love how dog-friendly it is. I also love to wander around Portland’s working waterfront. All the clutter and chaos is fascinating. I have great respect for the hard-working men and women who make their living on the ocean.

MTC: What are a few places to check out that are off the beaten path?

JC: Hmmmmm... I tend to go to recognizable places. The headlights, the docks, the beaches. So, maybe off the beaten path for me is seeing a familiar place from a new angle, or capturing how the atmosphere can totally transform the landscape.

“Fog, snow, rain, clouds, sunshine. You can visit the same place over and over, and see it differently every time.”

MTC: Where is your favorite place for lunch or dinner?

JC: This is a tough question because there are so many great restaurants to choose from. Off the top of my head, I am going to say "Pizza by Alex" in Biddeford. Their pizza comes in one-size-only. It’s ALWAYS excellent. And, pizza is great for lunch and dinner. (Breakfast too, actually). Ask them to cook it in the old oven, if you like your pizza extra crispy.

MTC: What does Vacationland mean to you?

JC: I don’t think I realized how incredible Maine is until I moved away. It gave me a new appreciation for this beautiful state with it’s soft sand beaches, rugged coastline, tiny harbors, beautiful lakes, and stunning mountain ranges. From one tip to the other, there is so much to explore and experience. The name “Vacationland” makes me feel proud to be from Maine.

MTC: In a few words, describe your perfect Saturday in Portland.

JC: A perfect Saturday in Portland would be to park my car at the Eastern Prom. Grab my camera, and walk the trail along the water into town to wander around the docks, out to the end of the Maine State Pier, meander around the streets. I love all the brick and cobblestone. I love all the people. I even love the seagulls! Portland is such an amazing city.

MTC: What makes for a good Mainer?

JC: Mainers are hard-working, independent, witty, generous, and creatures of change, because you “nevah know what the weathah will do next!”

MTC: Any words of wisdom for someone traveling to Maine this summer?

JC: There are so many incredible places to visit. If they are in the Portland area, of course, Portland Headlight. Plus, Bug Light, Spring Point Light, and Two Lights. Spend time at the Eastern Prom. Take a ferry ride out to Peaks Island or one of the other islands. The Schooners are also an incredible way to see the harbor. Wander around the Old Port. Visit Crescent Beach and Higgins Beach. Stop at Red’s in South Portland for an ice cream. Talk to the people who live here. They’re the best source for where to go. Where to eat.

MTC: BONUS QUESTION! If you had to guess, how many lobster rolls have you eaten in your life?

JC: Yikes!! Maybe 50. With butter, of course.
